Want A Filter With That?
I know, I'm sorry...
College has taken a temporary route to first priority when it comes to getting things done, but I haven't forgotten about you, the reader. My substance for material to write about has grown thin since news has been really slow, and not much is being said by way of coming attractions and things for DAoC. However, since the new patch has just come out, I thought I would talk about something in particular to that. I don't know what the responses are or were, or will be to this, but I'm sure that there is no easy way around anything. Such is life...
As you may have noticed by reading the latest Read file from Mythic about the /rp filter tool that they have given us, you may notice that there is much versatility to this that allows the Role Players the ability to be more immersive in their attempts to role play. However, as a semi role player, I see there is a flaw to this but it's one out of constringent rules and loops that must be closed for their sake. After reading what they have stated, I have found the matter to be quite puzzling and somewhat contradictive in their means to help support the Community of immersive role play.
This is just an observation mind you, so don't bite my head off on this and bear with me. Now, they state that they are 100% for the community and they like to help keep people happy and all that for what they are looking for by way of role play. They want to help gain more of that threshold because they know that there are a lot of people that love it and want more of this quality. So, they implement the /rp filter to help quiet the 'dude speak' from the role play servers so more Role Players can have their own little immersion. However, I found this to be a quick fix for the big problem at hand. I understand that there are a lot of inconsistencies and loops that many can use to say that, "Well, I was Role Playing, but in my own way..." and that sort of stuff. So, they used this new tool to give the Role Players and edge to defeat this problem. But does it really defeat it?
Mythic also states that anyone who is not abiding by the RoC Rules, that certain actions will be taken against the player, provided they are warranted. They also stated that if they break the rules and so forth depending on the severity, that they can even ban the accounts. Well, what I would like to know is: What are the limitations that the player has before they are reported? The standards are not drawn in the sand, nor are the regulations to prevent such things from happening. And what I mean is that one standard of one CSR could be different from another. Take two players, they both do the same thing, however, if you have two different CSR's dealing with the same matter, their outlook on what must be done won't be the same. It's these standards that are looped and not written in stone that need to known for everyone to be treated the same and punished the same should similar problems occur.
The idea that they implement the filter for the players to take their own incentive on what they want is a great and wonderful idea, however, it leaves a dissatisfied taste in my mouth for some reason. Knowing that I'm able to do this and restrict the abbreviations and such, that still doesn't solve anything. And I'm referring to actually limiting and controlling the 'dude speak' with action. Well, Mythic won't take the initiative to do what is honestly and truly necessary to alleviate this problem for some strict players of DAoC. They can't check every single string of text that someone types and says they aren't abiding by the rules, so the grip is loosened by only stating they will deal with cases that actually break the rules, single word abbreviations and the continual communication in this fashion even when asked to refrain. That's all they are willing to do. Anything else can be subjugated to a form of their own interpretation of what role play is, which leads to the loop I was talking about earlier.
There is no real way to absolve this problem at the core, but at least Mythic is taking a right step in the direction that they believe is correct. Allowing the player to take control of what they believe or feel is their own quality of immersion and giving them the tools necessary to do so. If Mythic really tries a little harder to enforce those rules, then you might see some actual changes and the feel of the realms if they do take the force that is needed. Though with time and patience hopefully, the kind of 'dude' will be ignored and all will be happy.
