In traditional Celtic lore, the bard wasn't a mere poet or musician, he was a member of the druids who preserved history. This tradition is carried over here, and the Bard maintains the ability to cast healing spells throughout his career. In addition, he can train in both Blades and Blunt and learn his own magical music, making him very diverse.
A Bard is an excellent class for those that find it difficult to get groups. Being able to learn weapon skills while still being able to heal is an excellent ability, and his music just makes that better. Their combat skills will not reach quite the level of a pure warrior type, but by healing themselves after bttle they can make up in volume what they can't attain in one kill.
Not only the lone adventurer, a Bard is even more welcome in a group. His travel song is always in high demand, and most groups would never turn away a healer (at least those that like not-dying). With capable melee abilities and a wide array of healing and recovery songs, the Bard is probably the most flexible music-based class in the game.
